Gerry Frierdich

Friends and family, The Touring Cyclist bicycle shop and the Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society are teaming up to put on a benefit ride for Gerry “Chief” Frierdich.

Gerry was critically injured Aug. 19, 2007, when his recumbent bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Greenmount Road in Belleville, Ill.

All proceeds from the ride will go toward paying for future medical expenses and other necessities.

Day-of-ride registration will be from 7 to 10 a.m., and cyclists can take off any time between 8 and 10 a.m. Routes of 6, 15, 30 and 50 miles will be available. Maps will be provided, and arrows will be painted on the roads. The first 500 registrants will receive a T-shirt with the picture shown above by Signal Hill School Louis Holm. Louis won a contest at his school to design the shirt, and the winning entry was picked by Gerry! (Click on the picture to see a larger version.)

The Touring Cyclist will provide SAG support until 3 p.m. for those with physical or mechanical difficulties. Drinks and snacks will be provided at rest stops along the route. Lunch will be sold after the ride at Central Junior High School, and listen to live music from area bands. Special thanks to the Belleville Police Department, who will aid cyclists in crossing Illinois Route 159.
